Why Brown’s Hotel Outshines Many Other London Hotels

The art of hospitality is alive and kicking at this London institution just around the corner from Bond Street. Brown’s Hotel, London’s oldest, (1832) exudes timeless elegance and history, making it a cut above many other luxury London hotels. Situated on Albemarle Street in the heart of Mayfair, Brown’s has witnessed over 185 years of London’s evolution, including being the site of the world’s first phone and phone call. Privately owned by Rocco Forte and part of Rocco Forte Hotels, this iconic hotel combines heritage and tradition with contemporary luxury, delivering an unmatched and unrivalled experience starting the moment you arrive.

History, Elegance and Unmatched Interiors

The interiors of Brown’s are a testament to the vision of Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte’s sister and renowned interior designer. Polizzi’s design marries the hotel’s historic charm with modern sophistication, creating luxurious and welcoming spaces. Each room and suite is individually decorated, blending antique and modern furnishings with contemporary touches - think charging cables, branded cable ties, luxury writing paper and TVs in the bathrooms. The beds are huge with super king pillows, deep mattresses and smooth high thread count bedlinen, and the en-suite marble bathrooms are large and luxurious with plenty of towels, flannels (my absolute bugbear) and sulphate-free Irene Forte bath and body products, I particularly love the large slabs of carefully wrapped natural soap sitting on mother of pearl soap dishes. Fresh flowers (changed every other day) adorn every hotel corner, from the pretty reception to the intimate bedrooms, restaurant and bar, adding a vibrant yet soft, feminine personal touch that really enhances this luxury hotel experience.

Attention to Detail and Exceptional Service

What truly sets Brown’s apart is its attention to detail and the exceptional service provided by its long-serving, charming staff. With a history of nearly two centuries, the hotel has perfected the art of hospitality. The staff, many of whom have been with the hotel for decades, deliver professional and deeply personal service, anticipating your every need with a subtle, discreet approach. This dedication to excellence creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel at home, whether a regular visitor or a first-time traveller. Although I didn’t use it, the friendly concierge can help with requests at any time of day or night; you can even name the time for your daily maid service and turndown. Richard Cooke, GM, is doing an excellent job as the staff couldn’t praise him enough for his work ethic and management style.

Charlie’s, the hotel’s elegant, classic restaurant, offers a romantic dining experience that captures the essence of British food with a modern, Mediterranean twist: pasta with tomato, orange and tarragon, arancini, zucchini flowers, steak tartare, tuna carpaccio are just a few of the options (oh and the bread is to-die-for, a recipe handed down to chef extraordinaire Adam Byatt by his grandmother). The ambience at Charlie’s is intimate, with soft lighting, leather seating, and a refined menu which changes to celebrate seasonal ingredients. The breakfast menu at Brown’s is equally impressive and mouthwatering, offering a range of options from traditional English breakfasts to healthy, modern alternatives, smoothies, pancakes and waffles. Every dish is meticulously prepared, ensuring that you start your day on the perfect note and leave the hotel with the memory of the best breakfast in London. The Drawing Room also serves breakfast and is more suited to those wanting a definitively English breakfast. It’s perfect if you want to pop by for a croissant and cappuccino. The Donovan Bar is a great place to start your evening with an eclectic selection of fairytale-themed cocktails featuring alongside an extensive selection of classic favourites. The sultry lighting sets the tone for an evening of intrigue and delight.

The 24-hour gym is next door and is fully equipped with the latest Technogym equipment, towels, fresh water and healthy snacks, so there’s no excuse for not keeping up with your fitness routine!

Whilst other London hotels are undoubtedly stylish with their Art Deco design and polished service, they cannot match the depth of history, personalised service, and attention to detail that defines Brown’s Hotel. Brown's Hotel is a clear choice if you’re looking for a luxurious experience steeped in history, with impeccable service, romantic dining, and world-class amenities in a great location. This iconic hotel is more than just a place to stay—it’s a timeless piece of London’s heritage, offering an experience as rich and unique as the city and possibly the best hotel in London. Only the second hotel I would call perfect.
