Lisbon has some wonderful places to stay and there are plenty of hotels to entice locals, discerning travellers and every budget. One of the trendiest areas to emerge in recent years is Intendente. It has a buzzing atmosphere and plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants to choose from. It’s also now home to 1908 Lisboa Hotel, a contemporary boutique hotel with restaurant and bar, which has a constantly evolving art gallery.

For something small, but strikingly beautiful, the 42 room Memmo Alfama fits the bill. More Miami than Lisbon this hip hideaway in Lisbon’s oldest district, is the perfect boutique hotel for the jet-set crowd with its red rooftop plunge pool and bar.

High up on one of the seven hills is the 11 suite boutique hotel Palacio Belmonte, one of Christian Louboutin's all-time favourite luxury hotels and if budget is no object and you love all things beautiful then this is the place for you. Authentic, luxurious and simply stunning, there’s no other boutique hotel like it in Lisbon. The oldest building of its kind in the city Palacio Belmonte is home to a stunning black slate pool. Tucked inside the ramparts of the Castelo de São Jorge, behind striking red wooden doors along an uneven cobbled passage, you’ll feel like you’re entering your very own private palazzo. A favourite with fashionistas, celebrities and those in the know Palacio Belmonte is one of Lisbon's best-kept boutique hotel secrets.
