The Newt in Somerset opened as a historic country estate near Bruton as a 23-room luxury hotel & spa in August 2019. This great British boutique hotel boasts beautifully cultivated gardens, a cider press, restaurants, farm and house and garden shops. With a focus on all things Somerset to celebrate the history and heritage of this county in the south-west of England, the estate and gardens have been lovingly transformed by Karen Roos, the owner of the award-winning luxury hotel and gardens, Babylonstoren, in South Africa’s Franschhoek valley.
The core architecture of The Newt is Georgian, with burnt orange limestone buildings. the seat of the Hobhouse family for more than two centuries. Innovative contemporary design complemented by antiques is paired with country walks, garden produce and superb service – wrapping you in a cocoon of comfort and luxury. Nourishing foods produced either from ingredients grown directly on the estate or by local suppliers and producers.
The Newt in Somerset spa has a great selection of international treatments inspired by the quintessential English gardens and countryside. The former barton farm buildings of Hadspen House have been lovingly re-designed to provide a luxury spa for the exclusive use of hotel guests - taking inspiration from the gardens and surrounding ancient woodland. Local materials such as Hadspen Stone and Blue Lias have been used throughout, giving a luxurious finish complemented by white marble, natural oak and glass features. Outside, a medicinal herb garden emulates monasterial gardens of the medieval era, providing a calming space for guests to soothe body, spirit and mind. The beauty and spa products are bespoke, made in partnership with a local company, using botanical ingredients and scents found in an English garden. The spa facilities include an indoor swimming pool and indoor/outdoor hydro pool, a wild swimming pool, mud rasul chamber, and a halotherapy room. The spa food and drink menu is designed to promote nutritional health and encourage friendly bacteria – with kefirs, kombucha and pickles for gut health, and olives, chickpeas and seaweed for healthy skin.

APOTHECARY BLEND FACIAL - A nourishing and hydrating facial created with a botanical blend created with ingredients straight from the hotel’s garden.
V-TOX OXYGEN FACIAL - Designed for clients who want to see visible results but do not want to undergo an invasive cosmetic procedure. V-TOX uses neuropeptides and algae derivatives to relax the skin added to specific areas that need to be treated or a fine layer applied over the entire face and neck. The product is then infused into the skin by the steady flow of oxygen with the use of our oxygen machine.
NEW SKIN CHRYSALIS - A full-body exfoliation and wrap, including a scalp and foot massage.
RASUL EXPERIENCE - An experience designed for two and carried out by you. Apply scrub to the whole body, along with a face and hair mask, followed with an application of body mud while you enjoy a private steam chamber.
HAMMAM SOAP TREATMENT - An ancient cleansing treatment consisting of a stimulating scrub, soap massage and water ritual, where lukewarm water is repeatedly poured over the body for the ultimate wind-down experience. In addition, the hammam’s heat and steam help tired muscles to ease and relax
The Newt, its bar, spa, restaurants, and The Story of Gardening are currently closed due to national lockdown restrictions but the gardens and shops remain open, with takeaway food and drink available to fuel your winter walks. All garden visitors are asked to obtain a Garden Membership ahead of visiting, to help reduce queues and maintain social distancing. There is no need to specify a day or time, just sign up online and visit whenever you like.
